[BC 14] Oceanic Skimmer - mods, improvements?

So... what can be done to make this sucker work?

 

I've heard everything from it's crap to it works if you set it up right.

 

I don't care too much that it skims a bit wet, what I do care about is that it removes at least some of the crap from the water.

 

The two big things i keep hearing are that it needs to be modded to have a higher skimming tower (easily accomplished) and that it also needs to have a more powerful air pump (suitable to hook it up to a gang valve system and run it off of my main pump?)

 

again, if it'll produce tea colored skimmate than i'd be happy with that considering the cost.

I've also read (not tried) that you should remove the included check valve as that affects performance.
