H.O.T. Magnum filter any good?

I came across one of these at work, customer returned, so i got to take it if i donated $5 to our fundraiser. as i can tell it's brand new, most of it was never opened. the tub of carbon is missing, but that's it. (on a related note i also got an aquaclear 300 with a missing top for $5)

 

my question was, is this a good filter? what would be some good uses for it? i assume the micron filter would pull out filter feeder's food, but what about the basic filter it comes with? is it a good quality filter? thanks for any advice...
