Why are skimmers clear?

It just hit me as I was looking at skimmers that they're all translucent. Is there a reason for that? I understand seeing the cup and skimmate but why the body of it?

my Tunze is all black.

My educated opinion, not fact

A lot of skimmers are or started home made. Clear acrylic is available in many more shapes and sizes than colored especially in round shapes. You can see inside is a big factor as well.

But PVC is a lot cheaper...

And more readily available...

yeah, but ugly

The Tunze and Remora have their extruded or molded. Others use a CNC router on acrlyic and other shapes that you can purchase from suppliers.

You can see the amount and size of bubbles through clear acrylic.

Clear is great for a ton of reasons...you can see the water lever, see how it works and it there's too much air in the skimmer.

My remora is black/clear which I like...but at times I wish I could easily see the water lever and where the bubbles are foaming up too...
