dsb or not dsb

in reading around the forum it seems most people suggest 1-1.5" live sand bed as a rule of thumb in a small tank. but some suggest more like 4" in a nano for better nitrate breakdown. but one post talked about avoiding the "problems" of a dsb.

 

any feedback on this for first time set up?
