Jakesaw Posted February 25, 2009 Share Posted February 25, 2009 Staining pine is a huge PITA. It's a paint grade wood, at best. You can stain oak ply quite well. Generally I agree. I've had good luck with Urethane based Gel stains on Pine though - even Construction lumber. The gel stains are more of a surface stan than a penetrating stain - so you don't get all the blotching that's typically associated with staining pine / birch. Link to comment

Lepomis Posted February 25, 2009 Share Posted February 25, 2009 My simple design stand utilized 2x4, 4x4 carcase and 3/4 inch ply top and bottom. I then covered it all with birch veneer ply for the top and insides, skinned outside in cherry veneer ply, cherry trim, and several coats of poly (no stain needed) let nature take its course.
