sarah_nick
Hi, Today I have just bought a new tank - an (BOYU) ORCA TL-550, which is 33 gallon. The tank has a protein skimmer, a UV steriliser, 4 X 24 watt T5 bulbs. This may be a bit of a silly question (I'm a bit of a newbie), but what exactly does the UV steriliser do? Sac_State
it kills bacteria, algea, and just about anything else that passes through it in an attempt to "purify" your tanks water. the bad thing about UV filters is that they also kill of beneficial bacteria, as well as other beneficial organisms like pods. in most cases they aren't necessary in reef systems, however, some people say that they are useful in preventing things like ich, or algae blooms. sarah_nick
Thanks. I assume it will only kill pods if they go through it though? The majority I have seen in my 8 gallon are either on rocks or the glass. Link to comment
