edge121212
can you guys give me some info on using filter socks carbon and phosban what I thought was as long as the filter sock was changed every few days it was a good thing to use now I am reading that carbon and filter socks take out trace elements that are needed by the corals any help please!!!!! and now I have no idea about phosban I was really hoping to use a filter sock to help keep the sump clean, the carbon to keep the water clear, and the phosban to take care of any phosphates Link to comment
yardboy
I use filter socks and like them, other than the fact that they have to be changed every few days. Not because I have lots of funk that is filtered out and clogs the sock, but because bacteria grows in them pretty rapidly and clogs them. I wash them in my washing machine, alone, and with no detergent. Works great for me. I also use carbon. The small amount of trace elements that they remove is minimal compared to the good they do in taking out organics from the water. I have a mixed reef system (hard and soft corals) and have real issues with allelopathy that is alleviated with the carbon. Read here and here for more info Link to comment
HecticDialectics
it probably takes out a little, but imo it's not all that serious... especially if you do regular water changes. Link to comment
