tau626
I just got my first SPS frag a week ago. I was wondering how can one tell if it is growing? The tips are kinda white? Is it growing or dying??? I have 160 watts above my 6 gall...CA-380...the tank has been up for 6 months....I know I'm being impatient, but if it is dying I'd llike give him to someonewho can keep it alive. Thanks Link to comment
Crakeur
what kind of coral is it? you should see some polyp extension and the white tips could be new growth or death. dead coral skeleton looks like the stark white coral you see wrapped in celophane at teh lfs (for fish only tanks). DeskJockey
It depends on what kind of coral it is and the color morph. What are we talking about here? With some the growth is very apparent because it will have a different color at the growth edge. But some others dont and they can look lighter in color at the growth edge. Digitata for example can have a much lighter color at the growth edge. Link to comment
Crakeur
another place to look is at the base. many frags will grow at the base as they grow upward. this is to ensure that they won't become too top heavy and break loose. Link to comment
surfy
Use a turkey baister and lightly blow some water on the ends. If you see some of the tissue falling off and exposing white skeleton underneath then it is probably dieing. If this happens I would try to frag as much good branches as you can to try and save some. Look up RTN (rapid tissue necrosis) if you don't know anything about it. It happens quick so be ready to frag. Also don't let the SPS touch any corals even of it's own kind especially until you know exactly what you have. It could also be some bleaching, I can't tell you very much without seeing it, hopefully it's just new growth. Link to comment
tau626
thanks... I'm not sure what kind of SPS it is...I know when I bought it it was a bright neon green with even brighter green polyps on it (it was under metal halides)...under my pc's the body has turned brownish and the polyps are not as green but theyre still pretty green...The polpys are circular and flat, no cilia stick out...the Frag is not touching anything...when I get home I'll check on the SPS... Thanks again Link to comment

DeskJockey
yeah kinda sounds like digitata and those do have a tenancy to have an almost white growth edge, at the tips and base, even under MH's. Can you take a pic to make sure? Link to comment
