very newbie test kit question

In looking thru the forums, there's some discussion of test kits. I'm getting ready to start a 12 gal tank. My lfs has tretra (cheap) and Red Sea ($50) multiple test kits. Is the latter suitable for cycling and the early months if I add a few other specific test kits later on? One reefer said his Red Sea kit was defective but it seems to be standard in alot of stores.

Using the tetra pH test kit i got a reading of 7.7 I go to petco and they tell me my pH is 7 using Red Sea. Im sorry but wtf!! Go with tetra, Or if you can get a fasTest
