diatom filter

Hey everybody. i setup my tank about 3 months ago and i have 3 filters going, 2 power filters and a protein skimmer recomended for a 20 gallon tank, only thing is, i have a 30 gallon tank but instead of getting a larger protein skimmer do you think a diatom filter would help reduce nitrates and phosphates and any other water problems. what egzactly does a diatom filters do anyway?

to some extent, if you like that type of filtration check out santa monica's "super powerful turf algae scrubber" thread. diatoms are great at silica, but I don't think many people are using them fro nitrates these days.
