RSM Tunze 9002 upgrade worth the hype?

Was wondering how the Tunze 9002 can be a better skimmer than the stock. My stock skimmer collects alote of funky skim and the pump pulls 320gph.. with a larger volume area than the Tunze. The Tunze has a smaller volume area so its seems that it would appear to collect more skim?? it also has a pump that only drives 224 gph

My question is what really is the facts so that i can make a decision on upgrading, im looking to do mostly sps so i wanna get it right.

All information welcomed

thanx

although i dont own a RSM tank, a lot of people i see here change out the "junk skimmer" and put in the tunze. i dont own a tunze but read its pretty much the best skimmer for its size.

if you like the stock skimmer and its pulling out nasties for you. why change it. if you really want to change, euro-reef is coming out with a line of nano skimmers which should work for your application.

Most RSM owners go with the Tunze. We have found that it pulls out waaaaaaaay more skimmate. It also is whisper quiet vs the jet engine of the stock skimmer.

If yours is working, all the better, but most do not. I have to empty my cup once a week, I would never get any skimmate with the stock skimmer, just junk in the neck.

The design of the RSM skimmer is really bad IMO, it is much too large for the size of the tank, once you get the stock skimmer out, you have a lot of room to work with and you can get the media out of the chamber of death.

really Euro-reef huh?? im considering the Tunze because i want to change the media without the hassle, and the Stevie T rack and cup are great for just that. I just dont want to have to bother after this. My next stop will be a larger system.

Stevie T you dont have sell me i ordered your cup and rack already and i got the Tunze warming up in the system. I love the rack and added space for sure, which is wy i made the switch, but i just dont have enuff confidence in the little guy yet :-/ althought it is very quiet..

Maybe i dont know how much skim is "alote", my stock does take a few weeks to build up in the cup if ever but the neck stays funky... i thought that was all it should do :-???

I read that they may need at least a week or so to get going well so i may have jump the gun on the worry side.

Great, sorry I get confused with member names and real names.

Give it some time to break in, every skimmer and tank is different, most break in within 1-2 weeks.

A skimmer should collect liquid skimmate in it's cup, not isn't neck. I have owned three skimmers in my short hobby experience and the RSM skimmer was the worst.

It would fit on the other side, but that is not why it was designed. I feel having water hit filter floss right away keeps a clean tank. Without that, you will have detrituis collecting in your rear chamber, which can cause nitrates.

I have been running SPS for over a year in the RSM, and have the same set up as you do now. So you will be good to go. A fuge is nice, but if you have zero nitrates, and do weekly water changes, you are accomplishing the same thing. Chaeto isn't this magical substance, it is there to help with nitrates and filter the water. But that is what a skimmer does as well, along with water changes.

IF you have no nitates, you are more than ready for SPS in the tank, that is if has some age to it.

Give the skimmer a chance, a lot of my customers get itchy with it at first but a few days later it starts collecting and they are more than satisified, I have never seen one not work, as long as you have bioload in the tank, the Tunze will collect for you.

oh, you are a recent order?! If so everything is boxed up and ready to go out tomorrow, unless you ordered over the weekend which left yesterday. You should have tracking info on your email. 2-3 days shipping time, shipped from the location in my member info to the left, Chicago area. Sorry, real names vs member names :)

just got my cup and rack, i havent set up the rack yet because im running both skimmers to give the tunze a chance to break in... but given the water level of the tunze i cant see how this cup will fit??? seems very tall, is it possible that could have gotten the wrong cup??
