ksupermnp
I’m cycling my 7 gallon mini bow- the lr has been in for a week, under the 14w stock lighting that came with the tank. Originally the lr was white with a little coralline growth and some green plant like algae. Now it’s covered with a brown something. Any ideas? Is this growth/death, good/bad? The lights have since been changed to a 32w smartlite. Temp - 80.1 Ph - 8.2-8.3 Salinity - 1.02 Nitrate and ites - no idea Link to comment

Physh1
If your tank is cycling you have elevated nutrient levels from the die off. This with the light will grow algae. I'd either not run the lights at all during the cycle or run them only a few hours a day (like 2-3). That will help keep the alage bloom down. Your gonna need some test kits here soon because you should really be monitoring your cycle. Cameron Link to comment
Kirklan
What you have is a diatom bloom. It is pretty common in a new cycling tank. Just wait it out and as your tank stabalizes it should go away. Buy some test kits and keep an eye on your levels so you can make sure exactly when the cycle is over. Then you can add some corals and maybe a fish. Link to comment
luvfishies
Definately diatoms. Just wait it out, it does go away on it's own. Hard to look at it covering everything, but trying to clean it out does no good, IMO. Link to comment
