Simmer or No?

I have a 7 gallon tank i jsut set up am i am runnin a bakpack 2 on it wich i know is over kill. I know that most of you out there dont use skimmers on your small tank, but if i dont how often do i have to do water changes? and how much more work is it. And one more question am i supposed to rinse out my crushed aragonite before i put it in my tank?
