sand question

How deep should a sandbed be in a fuge? Is there any 'rule', or the more the better? I'm in the process of finishing an above tank (25gal), 2.5 gal fuge.

I would guess at "the more the better".

 

If I'm reading this right, the 2.5 is on top. So I guess your pumping into the 2.5 from the 25? So as the water level in the 2.5 will always be the same right? This will allow you to use all 8", and since your wanting to use this as a refuge, anything deeper then 2-3" of sand will eat up all the space for algaes.

 

Have you already plumbed the 2.5? If not 5 gallons cost the same and are 3" taller.
