danc19
I plan to converte an established eclipse 12 SW fish only tank to a nano. I've got zero nitrites, but nitrates are through the roof. Is the only way to get rid of nitrates through water changes? I have 3 small fish in the tank right now. Link to comment
Crakeur
how long has the tank been running? give us some more details, substrate, filtration etc. Also, 3 fish in a 12 is pushing it, depending on the fish. they could be your problem. Link to comment
danc19
The elcipse has been running with SW fish for 2 years. I just put the CL 32W retrofit in, substrate is CC, and standard eclipse filtration w/ bio wheel. Also have small power sweep pump. Small Hippo clown goby cinnamon clown I was gonna start by adding some store bought live rock, but I put a hold on that until I dealt with the nitrates. Link to comment
Crakeur
well, you are going to cycle when you add live rock, tho it might be smaller than normal if it is store bought (less die off time). Might want to house the fish elsewhere while you cycle. Link to comment
chufa
If you manage to get some good cured live rock that has been in the store for a while and properly cared for, the rock should not give you any problems. I started my tank with such rock, and never had a cycle. It all depends on rock quality. Uncured rock will cause dieoff, as Crak mentioned, and you would be having another cycle in that case.
