simple overflow/return question

I am confused...

What if...an overflow was to fail (lost siphon, clogged, etc.)

wouldn't that cause the display to overflow from the sides?

because the return pump is going to continue to pump water until the sump is empty.

Am I overlooking something?

Possible. But that is why you build a small compartment for the return pump so that only that much water will return to your main tank so it may overflow but it won't overflow all the water from your sump. Or you could install a float switch that would shut power to the pump if the water level fell below a certain level.

i figured it out! the baffles keep the return pump chamber from filling if there is no water overflowing!

thanks for helping me see the light saltwaternewb :D

That's why an internal overflow box is ALWAYS best. The pipe itself can still get clogged which would be bad, but you dont' have to worry about a siphon.
