jof
What is the brown tube with 2 wing-like things? It is in the middle of the picture. Thanks!!! Link to comment
shrimphombre
A mushroom? Honestly, from the picture it just looks like some type of brown algae... Link to comment
jof
no it is not an algea because when i shine a light on it it goes back into the rock it also has a purple glow on it. its a tube that goes in and out of the rock. Link to comment
Mr. Fosi
Wow! That's an oddball. Does it respond to physical stimulus? How quickly? Link to comment
charlesr1958
If its just an extended "tube", you would most likely have to remove the animal from its burrow/cave in the rock to examine the entire animal, which is not something you are likely to do since it would mean breaking open that rock. jof
maybe it is some kind of Ascidia?? Link to comment
SPS20
Congrats, you have a deeply weird animal in your tank. I'm not sure i've seen anything like that in nearly 20 years of reefing. We demand tribute in the form of more pics. (It could still be a weird angle on something not-so-rare, hard to tell from those pics.) Link to comment
Mr. Fosi
That doesn't look like any sea squirt I have seen. Link to comment
jof
I can't get a better picture of it. There are 3 of them but this is the biggest. Here is another pic without using a flash. You can see the purple shine. Link to comment
Mr. Fosi
Do they respond if you touch them? If so, in what way and how quickly do they do it? Link to comment
spanko
Wow! gotta see what this ends up being! Link to comment
abe
actually... its a common hitchhiker clam. take a flashlight to that hole at night and it will be closed up for you to see the shell. i have a few of these. Link to comment
Mr. Fosi
So what we are seeing is the mantle? Link to comment
jof
when i touch them they go back fast and they slowly come out of the rock (the rock is from indonesia) Link to comment
spanko
The OP said: "What is the brown tube with 2 wing-like things?" Link to comment
justbob
How about this? This thing is only visible at night, and is on my flower pot frag just behind it. It sends out barbed feelers every evening. Whats happening here? Thanks, Justbob Link to comment
jof
The tube goes into the rock but the mantel is getting smaller but doen't totally go into the rock. So i think this cannot be a clam Link to comment
Mr. Fosi
Well, it is certainly an animal and not some kind of strange macro. Sea squirts don't respond like that, they just close up rather than retract. I suppose it could be a really extended clam mantle but I'd like to hear some more info from abe. Is it "feelers" it sends out or more like a mucus strand? Link to comment
jof
i touched again until it was totally inside the rock and didn't go smaller. I watched in there with a flashlight and i only see the thing you see on the pics. no shell just the tube and the rest but just smaller. (I don't have a clam but i think when i touch a clam it closses completely) Link to comment
The Nomad
How about this? This thing is only visible at night, and is on my flower pot frag just behind it. It sends out barbed feelers every evening. Whats happening here? Thanks, Justbob Probably a vermitid snail. Link to comment
Mr. Fosi
Doesn't look like a vermatid to me but that is why I asked for a clarification of the "feeders". Link to comment
The Nomad
Maybe Pericelis sp. I thought polyclad also but, it doesn't look like it moves around. Also just so we're clear, we're id-ing two different things right? Link to comment
Mr. Fosi
I believe we are IDing three things, but they are believed to all be the same type of organism. Link to comment
lakshwadeep
maybe a sessile ctenophore: http://www.chucksaddiction.com/hitchodds.html http://www.reefkeeping.com/issues/2004-03/rs/index.php Link to comment
