Hi....

not sure if you guys remember me, I've been here, just been in the background... :P

I've had some issues with the tank, pretty much most of my zoas to fluctuations, etc, but everything else is growing and doing great...I haven't had any money to do anything with the tank until good ole xmas rolled around...

SO, I now have a marine depot refractometer, chemi-pure elite, B-ionic 2 part CA/ALK along with a bottle of Mg, API test kits for KH and CA, and salifert MG test...

I was completely shocked(well not completely I knew it was off) when I got my test results(I tested a few times to make sure it was right)

this is for 2 in the afternoon

KH 6-7

CA 480-500

MG 150

salinity 1.030

pH 8.0

:(

So...I plan on slowly lowering that salinity, but anyone have any idea if that should change the other levels? The mg level is ridiculous, no I didn't make a mistake, it's 150! I'm guessing the only way my Ca is that high is because the kh is so low, I am getting a little precipitate white hardness stuff...=[

My zoas, all but 2 colonies, all melted, along with my gsp, but my lps (fungia, brain, and frogspawn) has done well and my froggie has about 12 heads originally having 2 only!

ANYWHO, just wanted to stop in, say "hey I'm not dead yet" and get some feedback for my whacky levels...also, I will soon have updated shots of the tank...just not too soon :P

Welcome back! Your MG is scary low! mine was at 900 and I couldnt keep the CA above 360. I use Kents Tech M and after dosing 4 tblspn/day for a while it came back up. lower your salinity slowly so you dont shock anything too bad. The froggie probly loved all the CA too lol. Good luck.

Good to see you back.

I would do a few waterchanges over the next week before dumping a ton of mag into the tank. See then if the number comes back up and adjust accordingly then.

I didn't plan on dumping anything yet, I am doing wc to get the salinity down anyways so I will test Mg after then....it's such a crazy test, there's like 10 things to do!

But thanks for the info!!! :)

hi everybodies!!!

Why not wait for the frag swap in Lansing at the end of the month?

WELL, I planned on going to Preuss to spend all my xmas monies....I have a feeling I would be overwhelmed at the swap... PLUS, to me it seemed like most people ordered their stuff in advance? Mostly though, I can't even decide what I want at the LFS and I can only imagine at a swap :o Is there super amazing deals there though?

Welcome back. Wondered what happened to you.As Evil said I would do a few water changes then test. Shouldn't be to hard to get things back in order after the water changes. You should go to the swap.Prices are alot better than LFS. Don't worry about ordering before you go there will be plenty. Also hang around till the end corals get really cheap.Good to see you back ;)

I vote Lansing swap also. I'll have a table there with plenty of purdy zoas. Plus you can get so much more there than you can at a lfs.

Could be worst, could look like my tank.

haha, SHUT UP

all the coralline on the back died off in the move last september...so it's now white blotches slowly dying off <_<

BUT, my clown hosts my euphyllia which is cute...I don't know what that has to do with it but it makes me feel better :P

SIDENOTE: I'm cycling a soon to be planted fw tank...if anyone has any tips on a way without co2 inj/low light required plants that would be great...

For lowlight lots of folks seem to be doing well with Flourish Excel.

http://www.seachem.com/Products/product_pa...urishExcel.html

THANKS SO MUCH!!! I have been seeing that working for people, but never really understood in complexity why, but that page explained it so well!

planted seems more complicated that reefing...and its fw <_< BUT, I will research like a mad woman while it cycles...

Good luck. My "planted" tanks always ended (started) in disaster. I probably have a almost new bottle of that stuff it you want it.

As for your freshwater... it will be interesting to see how you set that up.

Depending on the type of plants you want, taller, or bushier, here is a list for you.

Most freshwater plants need Moderate lighting. So you are looking at about 4-6 watts per gallon.

Amazon swords are nice: They use low to medium light (depending on the species) and if they like your conditions they can grow and spread rapidly.

Chain swords are great for the foreground/midground and will also spread nicely as long as you don't have too many bottom dwellers that would uproot them.

Cryptocoryne is a low to moderate light plant. It can be a little difficult sometimes, but is getting ever popular.

Jungle Val: has that nice long weedy look. It spreads nicely as well by runners under the gravel. Looks nice planted heavily in the midground and spaced enough where shoal fish like tetra like to swim through it.

Dwarf Saggitaria: Great midground plant.

http://www.liveaquaria.com/product/prod_di...&pcatid=827

Java Fern: Low to moderate lighting. Propagates by little daughters growing on the leaves of the mother plant. Just tear them off. This is a great plant for scaping with driftwood because you can take the older or newer daughter plants with a good root system and use rubberbands or fishline to tie them in place. It won't take their roots long to wrap around the driftwood and start growing.

Micro Sword: Moderate light. Great foreground plant and if kept after will grow like a grass carpet along the gravel of the tank.

Here is a video of my old 10g Ram Cichlid tank. These are of my rams laying eggs.

You can see the plants in the background. I was using the stock light but with the compact flourescent bulbs you can buy for them. I has 3watts/g on this tank.

Then as close to a FTS I have of it.

Then my old 33g

(The two large plants that reach the surface as the back of this pick are fake... I put them in for baby guppy cover because I got sick of keeping the baby net in there)

So I hope these pics give you some ideas of what plants you can use in the freshwater you want to set up. The light I was using was in the Low to moderate range.

You can get away with not using carbon by having using a good subrate like eco-complete and using additives. Unless you have Jungle Val, they don't like Flourish Exel.

Nice tank!!

I'm with evil, do water changes to get your MG back up, my 75G, when I realized the MG was @ 400, would have taken 5 bottles @ $20 each to replace the MG to where it needed to be, water changes should replace it easily over time.
