Shadowrider
I've been using a digital thermometer with the probe suction cupped to the back inside tank wall. Yesterday I bought a new digital from ToM Aquarium Products (http://www.tomaquarium.com/). The first digital is showing a temp of 81.7°F and the new one shows 84.4°F. A large dial type shows a steady 80°F and a smaller dial shows 84°F. Is there a way to check the accuracy of a thermometer besides boiling water (212°F) since I don't know what the range is on either of the digitals. Does anyone make an accurate thermometer? Captainj42
Digi therms suck, just get a cheapy Alcohol therm, they are way more accurate Link to comment

Mr. Fosi
$1.50 alcohol therms FTW. http://www.nano-reef.com/forums/index.php?...amp;hl=accurate Link to comment
HankB
$1.50 alcohol therms FTW. (Emphasis mine.) RAIT == Redundant Array of Inexpensive Thermometers. Why trust one? If you have two and they disagree, which one is right? With three or more, you have a fighting chance that 2 or more will agree at the correct temperature. -hank Link to comment
vg30et
My tom's aquarium themometers have been very accurate and match up exactly with what my ranco digital controller reads as well as my handheld infrared thermometer. The coralife thermometers on the other hand are 3-4 degrees off. Link to comment
Burks
My cheapo glass alcohol one is accurate within 1 degree. Tested in the lab. Link to comment

My cheapo glass alcohol one is accurate within 1 degree. Tested in the lab. Where you wearing a lab coat at the time? Link to comment
showjyr
If you do some searching around you can find ones that are lab and chemical industry certified. I got mine from a buddy that works in a local plant and it came with a certificate from some federal such and such saying it was accurate to so many 100ths of a degree. The liquid is blue....not sure what's in it. Also, correct me if I'm wrong but aren't the mercury ones a silver/metallic liquid....mercury? Link to comment
Mr. Fosi
... aren't the mercury ones a silver/metallic liquid....mercury? Yep. Impossible to mistake. Link to comment

Mr. Fosi
So your tank is 80.8F +/- 0.5 if you like standard deviation or +/- 0.3 if you like standard error. Either way, you are likely off no more than half a degree from the mean. Link to comment

chase33
I have 4!!! cheap coralife digital, stick on glass one, alcohol one, pinpoint temp Which one do you trust? I have always had multiple therms and they never recorded the same temp. Link to comment
Mr. Fosi
Did you see what I did in post #15? That is what you should do with yours. Calculate the mean (average) of the different term readings then calculate either the standard deviation or the standard error to get an idea of how soft that average is. It's a quick couple of calculations that will tell you a heck of a lot. Link to comment
