MY LR turning brown?

Its been 10 days and all of sudden my

colorful cured 10lbs of Kaelini are starting

to turn brown. Is this die off? Is this a

algae bloom? Light is 10 on, 14 off. The

one snail and one crab seem to be liking it

so I am thinking its an alagae.

You are experiencing brown algae blooms it sounds like. As I cylcled my tank I had a similar bloom after a similar period of time. The brown algae is actually a diatom. Nutrients and silicate cause them. Are you using tap water to fill your tank? Tap water tends to contain silicates and cause brown algae. Switching to reverse osmosis water or distilled water should reduce the problem. It will fix itself over time but you will still be stuck with brown crap everywhere. Get some good snails or hermits and they will clean your rock off a little. Hope that helps.

I use LFS pre-mixed water, and their RO/DI top off water,

from a store here in Dallas.
