There isnt much in the way of differences with those off the shelf "wave makers" they basically turn the power outlet on and off on a timed cycle. They work, nothing special there... where the problem comes in is that most pumps/powerheads (AC voltage pumps in particular) dont like being connected to them... they will get noisy, bang when turned on, get stuck sometimes, and eventually the impeller or other parts will fail. I use one but I use cheaper power heads so I can replace them as needed. If you really want a good system look at the koralia, tunze or the seio systems, They are usually 12V DC pumps which can be controlled better and also have a voltage regulator so you can control the pump flow in addition to the time but they aint cheap!
