What comes first the rock or the sand?

What should you put in first once you get the water settled in? The rock or the sand?

 

How long after you put the first in do you put the second?

Place the rock on the bare bottom. Place sand around rock to desired depth. Normally if you have the sand handy, you put it in after the rock. Some folks will place sand in the tank first and spend weeks looking for just the right place to order their rock from. So in that case you'd wait weeks after placing your sand in first. Now if you get your rock first... Just reverse the weeks thing. If that happens to apply to your situation. If all fails and this is confusing... Just grab a beer and a few shots of Cuervo and stare into the empty tank until you can envision how you'd like your tank to look.

 

In other words... You can't go wrong either way.

I think it’s primarily a question of stability. If you put your rocks in first, shifting sand won’t tumble your rockwork. You can put in sand first as long as you can arrange your rocks so they won’t tumble if they shift. X)
