Carbon and Protein Skimmer?

My first question is how nescessary is a protein skimmer and what does it do? Do you really need a protein skimmer in a 30 gallon or can you just use the natural filtration system(lr,ls,powerheads and thats it)?

 

What do you need carbon for in a refug?

Protein skimmers are still in debate to whether to use it or not. I use it cause I can fit it in my fuge to get rid of bio load from livestock. Use the Search feature for protein skimmers for more info.

 

I sometimes use a carbon equivalent, renew, in my fuge because my g/f doesnt like the fishy smell in the bedroom.
