Chetp
Hello all, I'm a total newbie and need lots of help. I have a 29 gallon tank and stand and thats all. I would like to know how to start a nano. Please tell me what i need (everything from filters to bulbs to corals and fish). I have a successful freshwater tank, so i know a little about aquariums. I'm looking forward to starting a nano but need help.Any info , no matter how small or insignificant (if you think) would be greatly appreciated and helpful. I'm familiar with the cycling of a freshwater tank, just need info on saltwater. Thank you all, Chet p Link to comment
caja
Welcome to NR! The first thing you will need to do before you start your nano is lots of reading. This website has all the information you need to get your nano set up and most of your questions can be answered from the information in the articles. Let me direct you to those for starters. http://www.nano-reef.com/info/ Start with the nano-reef articles. I know it's a ton of info to read, but it is well worth it. Link to comment
Deimos
Yup..agreed...read read, read some more..and then continue reading. In addition to NR..the other sites I'd point you to are www.reefs.org , www.wetwebmedia.com (you could spend days there), www.reefcentral.com . There are also some great books to look into at your LFS usually...look for authors such as Tullock, Borneman (the Coral God..lol), Sprung (The general reefing god), and Delbeek. Ebyond that good luck and remember, while there are a lot of ways to do a reef "right"..there are many more ways to do it "wrong"...do it right! HTH Link to comment
Jandree22
Buy a 10gallon tank and put a Lionfish, Hipo Tang, and Mandarin Fish in there after 3 days of cycling....first three things towards a successful reef:P :teehee: hehehe.... once you understand that joke, you're well on your way to understanding the details about a Nano;) seriously though, reading is ALWAYS a good idea for this hobby. To be honest though, while this hobby is definately VERY rewarding, satisfying, and plain 'ol fun, it DOES require a good bit of time, patience, and dedication...not to mention a bit of money! It is completely attainable to have a successful nano once you research and ask us ANY questions of confusion. Welcome and GL! ~Joel:happy: Link to comment

tinyreef
comedic amateurs deimos, if sprung is the reef god (btw i agree) then is dave the reef satan? jk dave chet, check out the members' tank forum for various setups. there really isn't a 'set' way of doing things. nano-reefers tend to diy more imo. this end of the hobby was 'started' by the outcasts of the general hobby. chastised by the pretender reef gods that "thou shall not create a reef-eden in such a small tank!". we held true to our belief that size does NOT matter. (hmm, maybe that's why all the girls hang out at seahorse.org X) ) lo, we spent 40 months in exile in the internet desert and while we were tempted with popup porn (some of us still paganizing, um crak? : ) and forced to conceal our nano-faith (i really did, closet nano-reefer then), we have succeeded. led out of the cyber-desert by moses (aka c-diddy and c-marks), thru the flame wars of the reef satan (see above, toughened us imo), and parting the red sea skimmers, we have finally arrived at the promised land. hallejuah!
