I have a piece of LR that has some orange sponge growing on it. The sponge has developed several big cracks in it, and a corner of it has turned black. I assume this means that its dieing. Should i take the piece of LR out of the tank to avoid polluting the tank when the sponge dies? Thanks for your help! :)

If you geniunely believe that its going to die completely you should remove the rock, scrape/scrub off the sponge and return the rock to the tank.

If you're not sure, I would be inclined to remove the dead tissue with tweezers without exposing the sponge to air and then keep the sponge under close observation. If it gets worse you'll have to remove it unfortunately but the good news is that you will often see the sponge start up again where it was initially situated
