Missing Fish Syndrome

My buddy had 1 clarkii and 1 tomato, both seemingly disspeared..... One he found on the floor, the other has yet to be seen.... he and I have both checked pretty much everything, floor, PH, Rock, filters, ect... so we've pretty much given up on finding the other guy till he starts to smell....... Other then heat any other reason these little buggers would be hopping out?

poor water conditions. check your water quality and that may be your answer
