Black long spined urchin

Ok, here is what's going on. He was in the main tank for a couple of weeks and shed some of his spines(stressed from moving). Since I have my hands in there often I did not want to risk getting stuck.(it is really hard to get there spines out of the tank.)

 

I moved him to my 29 gal refuge and he has growen (sp) larger but the new spines that came in are black with white stripes.

 

All prams are great. Tank temp at 80, he gets fed 2-3x a week.

 

Is this normal? Is there anything that I can do for him?
