iluvfishies01 Posted July 4, 2007 Share Posted July 4, 2007 When I start my sony laptop up, the screen says "SMART failure predicted on hard disk..." I know I have a harddrive problem. My question is... Is there a way to fix this or do I just have to replace the entire harddrive? I'm a bit familiar w/ desktops but i'm not so familiar w/ laptops. X-Ravin Posted July 4, 2007 Share Posted July 4, 2007 A SMART error is a hardware issue, the drive will have to be replaced. How long it will work until failure is the real question. I had one last 2 years and not fail, and I worked with another that died in 10 minutes. Either way I'd recommend backing everything up and getting a new drive, feel free to shoot me any other questions about it. Link to comment

I think it's a hitachi harddrive, but I'm not exactly sure. I can't seem to find this online. Thanks so much for your help. Is it as easy to install a laptop HD as it is a desktop HD? Link to comment
X-Ravin Posted July 4, 2007 Share Posted July 4, 2007 SHould be really easy, probably easier than a desktop, theres usually an access panel somewhere that wil have a couple screws and will pop the whole drive out, then you just shove the new one in and screw the panel back on. It doesn't matter what brand you get, I'll do a little research on what kind of drive that comp has exactly and I can recommend you a new one. Link to comment
