Red Leg Hermit questions

My red legged hermit crab lost waht looks a half his legs. I saw them on the sand. He sat in the same place for two days. I thought my damsels eat him. Now today he's climed up to the top of the live rock.

 

Do they shed thier skin and this is just his skin I saw in the sand?

Is he ok?

Should I put some larger shells in the tank for him to move into?

 

Also, I went to buy a Olive snail yesterday to move the sand around and they wanted $8.00. Is this the going price? Sounded a little high to me.

He probably molted.

They do so when they outgrow their current exoskeleton.

As far as olive snails, not sure exactly what that is...id get a few turbo snails and a small cuke.. those guys clean sand like no other! I may be making a run to the keys here in the next week or so and can get you any size cucumber you want 1-12"!
