WorldNation
what are thoe 2? also, this is probably very stupid, but what are the easiest and best corals to start off with. simplest to maintain, and stuff like that. i heard it was soft corals. i'm first planning on starting off with some mushrooms. what are the requirments as far as lighting for them? is there a place where i cna read up on that online?.. coralreefengr
Start with soft corals. LPS are large polyp stonies and SPS are small polyp stonies. Mushrooms are great to start with. They are undemanding and do not require intense light. CRE Link to comment
Crakeur
small polyps stony corals are corals such as acropora, montipora, pocillopora etc. They are among the tougher corals to keep, although montipora seem to be able to withstand the worst of all environments (in my experience that is). Large polyp stonies include torch coral, hammercoral, frogspawn etc. a bit easier to keep usually. Best bet for starting out: zoanthus (head to thelogicalreef.com for the very best) mushrooms, perhaps a capnella or colt coral, toadstool leather, etc. stay away from adding corals until you know what they need to thrive (not survive - you want happy healthy corals, not just living corals). Once you know what you need from your tank, and you can provide it, then you should consider adding corals. Otherwise you'll be putting the corals at risk. Link to comment
WorldNation
well, curently, i'm setting up my tank right at this moment. jsut putting it the live sand, water, and6lb's of live rock. i'll add more after about a week, and then ia week after, i'll check out my water perameters and get some mushrooms. my lfs has a nice selection of corals, and cheap too. they have a beutiful nano-reef corner tank, i think like 280 gallons. coralreefengr
280 gallons?? Do you mean 28 gallons? 280 wouldn't be a nano-reef. It's just a mini-reef. CRE Link to comment
coralreefengr
Hmmm...not sure what to call it then. I've been calling pico less than 10 gallons, nanos less than 30 gallons and everything else...mini. I know it's a topic that has been debated now and then, but what's bigger than mini in a captive system? CRE Link to comment
Crakeur
I was simply implying that 280 is frickin huge and that it wasn't so mini after all. Link to comment
WorldNation
yup. 280 gallon reef tank. it looks reaaaallllll nice. the guys specialise in marine and cichlid tanks. they got themselves a really nice store, the best in the area actually. Link to comment
