Help----read This!!

Ok, have a goofy question....

 

 

I was going to get a 20lb. bag of Natures Ocean at the LFS. The guy there said I have to put a layer of crushed coral on top of it??? Eventually the sand will rise to the top??

 

I have a 20G long and am looking to get a good base for my tank. Maybe 2" thick.

 

Should I mix crushed coral with it or no??

Crushed coral is old school and a detritus trap. Just use sand. If the sand will rise to the top anyhow, why not just start out that way. I don't get it.
