Spar Varnish

I going to make a hood for my tank and from what I read Spar Varnish is the thing to use. I've use it on out door furniture before and it looks great. But, I don't think I would like that finish on my oak hood. The Spar Varnish I've used left a slight yellow to the finish. It wasn't totaly clear. My uncle who makes custom furniture and cabinets told me to use Polyurethane. He said it's almost indesructable as long as you let it dry real good. He also said there is a wipe on poly that is great for DIY because you have better control and tend to use more lighter coats instead of brushing it all on at once. What do you think?

depending on the wood your using spary may leave spots. Use brush on poly. A lot of small coats. Just use a light hand and don't slather it on. And if your uncle uses it he can probally hook you up. Free is better :D
