Little white... thing... popping out of my live rock

Hi all,

I am new to the whole saltwater tank business, and let me start by saying how informative I have found this site to be! It has helped me a lot so far, but unfortunately I've encountered something that I can't easily figure out through the forum search...

After sucessfully nuking some nasty little anemones (cant' remember what they're called, the name starts with an "a"), I noticed a little white thing poking out of a hole in my LR. It is fiji LR.

This white thing is too small to get a good picture of. It has what can only be described as a "stem" coming out of the rock, and then it's diameter increases, and it has basically a flat top (it looks kinda like a cumulo nimbus cloud).

Right now it is about a 1/4" in diameter at it's largest.

The top is very slightly "ruffled".

It has not moved in about a week.

I've tried searching for it online, but it's hard to google "funny looking white thing poking out of my live rock", lol.

Does anyone have any idea what it is?

Thanks!!!

Hi welcome to nano-reef.com... it really is an excellent resource for every saltwater aquarist. :welcome:

Those pesky little anemones are called aiptasia.

It's really hard to tell without a pic but it sort of sounds like you described some kind of fan worm. I take it it's stationary? Google fan worm of feather duster worm and see if you can find a pic.

This is a cool site to browse through to help id hitchhikers... http://www.wetwebmedia.com/liverock1.htm.

Hi,

Thanks for the reply. I will check out some of the websites you put up there for me.

As for this being a feather duster... not it's not (I do have tons of those though!)

This thing is stationary. And it is white, very white. And it's stem and head are all one peice (not like the tube and "feathers" of a feather duster).

It's change in diameter from stem to top of it's head isn't that sharp either... it's like a martini glass, really, but with a thicker stem than you'd see on a martini glass.

Any other thoughts??

  • Hey fellow SW hobbyists I am also concerned with a white like worm stuck and poking out of my LR. After googling and researching I have been unable to figure it out I was hoping anyone had an idea of what it could be. It started growing on the frag plug for my zoanthids and it’s also stuck to my glass. If anyone could help it would be greatly appreciated thank you!! :)

Could they be *vermatids? Do they come out when you feed and/or do they form their own narrow tubes? I had them for quite some time. Harmless from what I understand, though they can irritate corals and are unsightly en masse.
