Light comparison (aquatic life vs 2 mh units)

Hi all. Still haven't gotten a light fixture yet.. lets just say im really doing my research for budget friendly lights! lol anyways, I've been leaning towards metal halide, because I found a contact for fishneedit here in canada. While I wait for this deal to come through, I've come across other 'deals'. Id like some guidance and help from all! And yes, for those that get pissed with these type of questions -- I did a search and I found minimal information here and on google. Id like as many people to give a response as possible. thank you again.

1. First, the aquatic life fixture. Found a site thats giving it to me for a good price in canada. not sure what lunar led's are for? can anyone tell me? leave them on at night -- but does that stress the fish?

2. metal halide in the DIY section, but it seems like its already put together... dimmable ballast -- is that necessary for metal halide?

http://www.goreef.com/Metal-Halide-HQI-Ree...em-150W-DE.html

3. another metal halide thats 10 bucks cheaper.. not sure why... was wondering if you guys could read it and let me know. I don't understand what the optix 3 vs optix 1 is.

These are the three options, while i wait for fishneedit.

Another question -- lets make it question 4... I've seen a lot of the bulbs people use on their fixtures are 6500k. I thought 10000k was the min? or are these rules for metal halide?

thanks in advance

fairly sure there are also 6700K MH bulbs. people who go with FW planted tanks often will use the 6700K and 6500. among other bulbs. tho reefers like to use them too to supplement their massive lighting setups (for med-large tanks)

#2 is a double ended bulb / #3 is a mogul (screw-in) type.

Have ya looked in the FS threads for a 150 MH setup? Even shipped to The Great White North I'd think ya could save some cash.

If ya go with a T5 fixture...

Better more expensive units have:

individual reflectors for each bulb

separate timers / multiple power cords

"moon lights" for night viewing

You'll wanna replace the "stock" 10K and "stock" 420 bulbs as they are pretty much junk.

Ya know what I got already ... lol ...

but I'm gonna say go with a 150 MH double ended fixture and a 14K Phoenix or a Reefluk 12K bulb.

lemme dig around and see what turns up....

thanks for the response!

yea i initially wanted to go for the MH 150w... but waiting and waiting on that got me searching for other options, and that aquatic life just seemed like a great deal -- especially for up here..

I considered the FS threads from the states, to ship here.. but... I'm looking at total approx $200 bucks (its gonna cost min 50 bucks to ship up here) for a 150w USED fixture that has no gaurantee that it'll last me longer than a year... for an extra $100 I can get a brand new fixture either the t5 aquatic life, or those halides that i linked ...

I'd probably use the lights for at least ... a couple months (lol) before scrapping them... lol

lol, thanks for searching for me... second one wont ship.. first one -- back to what I was saying...shipping is around $70-$130 to canada from the states.. sooo... lol, and the gaurantee that im not gettin ripped off? sending back to sender becomes a bit more complicated

#2 then if it goes thru.

Your still gonna need a bulb, a way to hang it up and by the looks of the thing a little wiring.

I had a 150 Phoenix 14 over a 20L in the past bout 8 inches off the water....awesome.

best-o-luck

Just build a canopy and get it over with already ... lol

How bout one of these:

http://www.jlaquatics.com/product/MH-CPENA...-+1+x+150W.html

Kinda pricey, but it's plug and play. Just replace the stock bulb down the road.

Ya could also build a PVC "hanger" paint it black, attach it to your stand from the back and have a decent looking way to hang a MH pendant.

Here's another... install decorative shelving above the tank, hang the MH from that, and make it look nice with knick nacks or whatever on the shelves. Gives a kinda "built - in " look.... eh?

I'm just tossing out ideas here ....

you know what I was actually looking at that fixture... there was one on sale locally here -- used for 150 bucks.. but everything ive read on this site says stay away from coralife?' lol, otherwise that looks like a great deal!!

so in ur opinion, ur sayin thats better than the aquatic life t5 fixture, those other posted mh fixtures, and a fishneedit fixture as well?

and ive been looking at that canopy build u sent me EVERY day.. lol, u have no idea.. .ive gotten over the fear of building the canopy.. its just the wiring now thats got me dumbfounded.... each retrofit comes with a million wires lol

also this -- ive heard these are new and pretty good -- HID technology.. cept i dunno if i can replace bulbs wiht other companies.. i think id have to stick with aquatic life bulbs?

I know he's thinking of going back to a bigger setup and may have something to sell ya or could recommend something for your 20L.

He's good at finding deals.....
