davce99
Hy to all, I'm Davor from Macedonia and i will like to change my Lighting from PL to LED I will like to do with 28 leds 14 x Cree XR-E Q5 White PCB Mounted ETGTech.com 14 x Cree XR-E Royal Blue PCB Mounted ETGTech.com for now i have 2 drivers 1A i will buy another 2 and the Heatsink i found one for free I will like to ask the experts about the optics and the power supply, - do i need optics? - and which Power Supply for 4 recom drivers, 4 string x 7 leds? Link to comment
evilc66
I will be interested to see how those Recom drivers work. I requested samples, but haven't seen them yet. Don't know what optics you will need, as I don't know what size your tank is (maybe I do, we may have talked about this before). Could you give your tank size? Those drivers will take up to 36v, so any power supply from 28v-36v. You will need a minimum of 28v for the 7 LEDs per string. Overbudget on current. With 4 drivers running at 1A, a 4A power supply is too close for comfort. I normally budget at least 10% over the requirement, so look for something 4.4A or bigger. Link to comment

That will get you into 150W MH levels. Power supply looks fine provided that you adjust the voltage up a little. I would get it up to 28v to be on the safe side. 27v could work, but it's a little too close for comfort. I don't see a problem with you ordering LEDs and lenses on the group buy. I will have to find out what shipping would cost. PM me your address and I'll find out. Looks like a good start! Why is the heatsink black? Just curious. Scott Black is actually a very good color for a heatsink. It increases the heat rejection rate. Plus, it looks cool. Link to comment

Goes to show you learn something new everyday, I thought it would trap heat as a coating. Evil once again with the plethora of knowledge!!!! I agree it looks cool, too late for me to color mine black. No way I am taking it all apart Scott Link to comment
evilc66
Annodizing is a lot different than paint. It's actually a surface oxidation that is dyed and then sealed. Other than the dye, there is no additional material added. Black is the best for heat rejection and absorbtion. White is the worst. Annodizing is a little expensive for small single pieces. evilc66
Why not? Shouldn't make any difference. Link to comment
davce99
Why not? Shouldn't make any difference. I don't know why ! When i turning the potentiometer it's always the same light but i used 500ohm, recom recommending 1Kohm http://www.recom-power.com/pdf/Innoline-2008/RCD-24.pdf I used this power supplies The first is not switching The second is Lg switching supply from my cell Phone Link to comment
evilc66
It probably wasn't working because you were under volting it. That switcher is only 4.6v (or something like that). Thats below the minimum voltage for that driver. Link to comment
davce99
I made test also with only one Led. The same thing! Link to comment
evilc66
Doesn't matter. The driver can't operate below 5v. Link to comment

evilc66
Depends on the size. The 8.5" wide heatsink we get from HeatsinkUSA is usally 5lbs per foot. Link to comment
davce99
for example one with dimension 30 cm x 25 cm, can you tell me in kilograms Link to comment
evilc66
I have no idea. Every heatsink is made differently. The ones we use have a very thick base which makes them heavy. Link to comment

davce99
Finally in Macedonia i want to ask the experts about the difference between Q5 WD and Q5 WG Link to comment
evilc66
Color temperature. The WD bin is a little higher color temp than the WG, but not by much. WG is the most common, and is right around 6500K. Link to comment
