So, one of my LFS here in Tampa sold this fish to me as a Yellow Watchman Goby. I realized it was a blue spot which I was fine with, and for 10 bucks, it wasn't a bad deal. I was hoping to get a pistol later to pair him up with. I put him in the tank day before yesterday and didn't see him until today. Now he's out, but he looks like this, coloration is decent, but his eyes are cloudy. He's definitely alive as I can see his gills moving, but he doesn't look too good to me. Should I be worried? :o :o

Probably a bacterial infection. Pull him out and put him in quarantine (like you should have done in the first place) and treat with a broad spectrum antibiotic like erythromycin (maracyn)

Also looks like a yellow watchman to me

No, his eyes were not cloudy when I got him. And if he's a YWG, how come he doesn't look like this? LOL

I mean, he's got the same spots, but he sure ain't yellow.

It is a YWg. A fish store that sells a fish as expensive as a blue spot jaw fish as a YWg will be out of buisness very soon.

Sorry, I meant bluespotted watchman goby..not blue spot jawfish...

Here, see the difference for yourself. Now can you tell me that these are the same fish?

Spot pattern and fins still look more like YWG than blue spot to me. Could just be pic quality though. Either way, cloudy eyes usually mean a bacterial infection

Definitely a watchman goby. A very stressed and sick yellow watchman goby.

Just checked all my params, everything is still spot on, ammonia - 0, trites - 0, trates - 5-10 and ph stays @ 8 and my salinity is 1.024..guess I'll just wait it out and see how he is in the morning.

Or you could begin setting up a QT tank so you'll be ready to go the LFS in the morning and get antibiotics for him. That is, if you want to ensure he lives.

I mean I'd like to ensure he lives and all, but not sure about investing in a QT tank for a 10.00 fish.

Then again, I found a 10 gallon just now on CL for 30 bucks that includes stand, filter, hood & lights. Might go ahead and scoop that up tomorrow, mixing salt to fill now. How about the filter, when I set it up, should I leave a sponge in my rear chambers overnight so it gets filled with bacteria from my current tank, so the transition to the new one is a smooth one? Not sure how that works....

That's the responsibility you take on when you care for living, breathing animals.

But if money is your main concern, then a little research will tell you that a quarantine tank need not be expensive. Pick up a 10g cheapo glass tank, a cheapo heater, and a HOB filter. Throw in some PVC pipes for fish to hide in, some bio-media from your display to seed it, and you'll have a fully functioning quarantine system.

that's the plan...and money is a concern, but not my main. If so, I wouldn't be in this hobby

So, went out and scored a deal on a QT tank. 20 bucks for a 10 gallon, with stand that fits a 20, meds for fish, an AC30, air pump, and another penguin filter and other stuff that I'll probably just toss. Now I get back to the house, to set this thing up, and the frikkin Goby is nowhere to be found. I'm leaning towards NOT tearing my tank apart to find this guy either. Should I just set it up, and hope he comes out from his spot sooner, vs later?

There's no point in setting up a quarantine tank at this point.

The damage is done. Either the fish will live or die. Catching it and moving it to a new tank at this point will cause too much stress and likely guarantee death. Right now you just need to wait things out.

Just keep encouraging it to eat and hope it bounces back.

They lose their color when stressed. If it survives, the coloration will likely come back in a week or two.

Sounds good. With that being said, you know anyone in the market for a 10 gallon tank, stand, and AC30 filter?

That is the difference between male and female, you have a female according to your picture.

looks about right, minus the cloudy eyes. Today she's nowhere to be found, but I can see some substrate piled up behind my LR so I'm hoping she dug in back there and is waiting for me to throw in some food. Time will tell ;)

Yeah, the cloudy eyes are definitely bacterial, Good Luck!

Cloudy eyes is also a very common symptoms of flukes, which can be treated with PraziPro. It could be a bacterial infection, but cloudy eyes doesn't mean it is always a bacterial infection.

Micro-Reefs Aquariums

Give the fish a couple days to acclimate and tell us if she feeds or not. Hopefully it comes around on it's own, with the parameters you stated, all constant and stable!
