youincolor
Thought I would post my 20l plan and give this thread a bump. Reading this thread just now helped me make up my mind about what new tank to set up. I have had numerous tanks in the past so I have a lot of equipment left over. I have everything to build a 40br, a 20l, or set up a Biocube 8, but the 20l sounds like it will be easiest for me to run right now. Tank: 20l drilled for an overflow, not sure what style yet. Possibly rimless, but I need to look into how safe it is with a standard AGA 20l, and drilled. Sump: 10 gallon (or larger) refugium full of live rock. Possibly a rubbermaid container if I can find a good size that will fit under the stand. Not sure if I want macro or not, possibly just a proper Berlin Method tank with a bunch of live rock. Equipment: Possibly a Mag 9.5 return pump with 4 returns drilled into the tank, to avoid having any powerheads in the tank. No skimmer. 2 100 watt heaters controlled by a Reef Keeper Lite. Lighting: Current 2x24 watt T5 light, would like to upgrade to a 4x24 in the future, but like I said I already own all this stuff. Stocking list: As much live rock as I can fit in the sump, and a two-island style in the display. I plan on keeping zoas, LPS, etc. I want to avoid dosing as long as possible, I kept SPS and clams for three years, and I don't miss it. Not sure what kind of fish yet, I have had all the basics in the past, clowns, gobies, cardinals, pygmy angels, wrasses, dart fish, etc. This time I want to get a couple hard to find fish that aren't so common. DimePieceReef
20L Marineland Drilled w/DIY Overflow Hello reef peeps! I just wanted to share my nano reef with everyone. Glad to be a part of the 20L crew!!! I hope one day I can have my reef look as great as all your reefs..I admit I still have a lot to learn. I have had my 20L up and running since 8/16/10. I originally had a 10 gallon hence the name of Dime Piece Reef which doesnt really make sense anymore...but anyway I transfered everything from my 10 to 20L. It took some time to get everything ready...but Im glad I took my time now that everything is up and running. I have my reef drilled into a 10 gallon sump as well...which is something that I had trouble with as I cracked the first tank I drilled...DOH! james.tsai
Hello 20L thread, I am a NEWb to this whole reef keeping thing, having spent a number of years keeping a FW tank. I recently started up a 20G Long and thought I would get some feedback and suggestion as I start taking the plunge.... some quick facts about my setup: -Standard 20L -20 lbs LR / 20 lbs of live sand -Hydor Nano Powerhead - 425 gph -Acquaclear 50 (200) running purigen and a bit of filter floss to trap particles (planning on adding Chemi-pure Elite when I add some actual creatures) -Stealth heater 100W -Coralife Tank Mount 150W HQI, still need to figure out how to mount separate blue LEDs that I bought Other equipment I am debating - hang on refugium (or just mod to AC), Vortech mp10 Parameters: Ammon / Nitrite / Nitrate = 0, pH = 8.3, kH = 11, temp = 78, SG = 1.024 The tank has been running for 4.5 weeks now and has cycled properly. In the last two days I added: -1 bangaii, -a couple small zoa colonies -3 head duncan -2 dwarf zebra hermits I thought it might be too much to add at once but the guy at the LFS, who seems to know his stuff, told me its not a big deal to add all this stuff at once... what do you guys think? My questions: - When I should I test parameters again and how often for which tests going forward? - When can I add another coral / fish? - What other fish might be good to add? I was thinking goby/shrimp pair, two black & white clowns, and maybe something else down the road. I love the look of a 6 line but hear they can be very aggressive. Here is a pic of the tank before I added the livestock... Do you think the rockscape is good? I have a little archway for swimmers and there are small caves under the arch on the left for critters to hide but I am wondering if I need more hiding spots? Also, how do I get the frag I got to propagate onto my LR, just put them on/next to the rock and nature will take care of it? Any other thoughts or suggestions are most welcome! Link to comment
latteslave
Good looking scape. I would suggest starting a thread in the members section to gain more feedback. Sounds like you have things going well. I would have tested the parameters before adding anything, usually your lfs will tell you whatever they can to get you to walk out with things. You should always check and research before adding. Link to comment
wienerdog
My tank has been up for about 3 months now and has only had softies and LPS in it. I am getting ready to hang a Hamilton 175w MH pendant in the next few days. Thanks for lookin'!! Link to comment

Sounds like you have things going well. I would have tested the parameters before adding anything, usually your lfs will tell you whatever they can to get you to walk out with things. I definitely had my water thoroughly tested and the parameters checked out as I had posted in my initial post so I figured it was good to add livestock. At first I was going to do one coral and one fish but was assured by a long time nano keeper that I could add a couple other corals without issue. I am going to test the water again in the next day or so and am only keeping lights on for a few hours a day since I have a 150 HQI and they were under HOT5s in the store - is that necessary? When can I start keeping the lights on for the normal 8 hrs and when can I move the corals off the sand bed and onto the rocks? I will look to post in the members forum, if I can figure out how to do that... thanks! Link to comment
latteslave
Tsai - I would not worry too much on what you added. Just be sure to do plenty of research moving forward. As for the coral, it really depends on how they are doing. I always feel comfortable moving them up whethey are completely open and looking healthy for about a week. You can probably start increasing the light cycle again... Maybe add an hour very couple of days. Wienerdog - great start! Looking forward to seeing how things develop... You should add a link in your sig to your tank thread. Link to comment
SaltyFlip
This Tank has been running since Jan 5, 2011. I'm still waiting for my sump and a bunch of other things that's why I've got the crap "filter", which you can see on the lower right. All rocks was already mature and live coming from my old 12g Nano Cube. The sand is a mix of Fiji and Samoan Pink. -15-20lbs of rock -30lbs of sand -LED lights Link to comment
