Sand ?

So I'm not new to the hobby but I'm new to sand. In my current tank I have crushed coral and I've never had this problem. I set up my new tank with fine sand, live rock then filled it. Problem is it seems to have this dust tank is all over the rocks and clouds up the tank every time I move them. Any tips or tricks? It's currently in the cycling phase and I haven't set up the protein skimmer, which is new to me, will the protein skimmer take the dust out ? Tip, tricks and help appreciated !!!!

Filter floss will be your friend in this case... It'll take awhile for it to get cleared up but as long as you're not constantly moving the rocks around it'll settle out. Use a turkey baster to suspend it in the water until the filter floss can grab it.

New tank has the same thing going on, but my filter socks cleared it up within 5 hours or so. Filter floss is the go-to.

Sand should in most cases be rinsed through multiple times before introducing it to the tank, it will lessen the amount of cloudiness that will happen if disturbed. But like others have suggested running filter floss will help. I've been in your situation before, you constantly have things to learn. Have fun!

Thank you! Wouldn't that have killed the live sand though ?

Depending on the sand you used was it dey or livesand?

Livesand says don't rinse and it really has very little dust- mine was clear in 2 hrs.

The dry sand is supposed to be washed well to remove the dust.

As suggested, the filter floss will help, turkey baster will help. As its cycling it will clear up

I gave up on the cloth filter socks and am now just using fine mesh socks- so much easier. Gets out a TON of stuff and can be cleaned in the sink in 20 seconds.

Mesh socks? Do you have a link for those? When I ran my 29gal I had the cloth ones, and they were awful to clean.

Edit: for what its worth- I ALWAYS rinse my sand before I place it in the tank. I rinse it until the water runs completely clear.

im using felt, mine don't clog that fast and I clean them regularly don't know if that helps? But I want to try mesh although it says they don't work as well as felt?

I rinsed 10-12 lbs of sands in a 5 gallon bucket in about 2 hours and my tank cleared up in less than 24 hours without a filter

Thank you all ! I have filter socks laying around so that's an easy fix.

I don't plan to completely redo the set up though. It's cycling so my nano can be moved into it when I move (thankfully I was fortunate enough to be alowed that option.

No need to redo man!

What I do is 100% mix up the sand every day until it no longer clouds up. It lets your filtration get all the crud.

My skimmer was pulling out what seemed to be cement!

Didn't realize they were that easy to search.. I always thought the cloth ones were the only ones on leading reef stores. Thanks for this!

Those are for my tank, you may need different ones. But the junk falls off in sheets in the sink; so easy. I trashed the cloth ones

Not sure in all honestly, but it's working great.
