New lurker here. Finally getting into saltwater aquariums so I'm still learning.

My plans are 2 fishes and some mix sps/lps corals.

I went with a Nuvo 10 tank on a biocube stand

Equipment:

- Kessil a160w w/ goose mount

- ecotech mp10wes

- spin stream nozzle

- inTank media basket ( planning on running filter floss, chemipure blue, phosphate)

- mj900 return pump

- 50w cobalt Neotherm heater

just waiting on my dry rocks to come from reefcleaners so I can start Aquascaping

Went for the Red Sea coral pro salt for my mixing and caribsea Arag-live sand

Will post pics as I start getting it set up

Good luck and welcome to the club! Check out my fusion 10G thread.

Got the rocks epoxied and equipment set up. Forgot to stop by the fish store to get some rodi water to mix so that'll have to wait til tomorrow to start the cycle

Thanks dferr.

Was able to add water in... I realized that the tank didn't take exactly 10g and I put enough salt to mix for that amount. Only 7-8gallons total. Going to have to take some out and put rodi water.

My spin stream is broken so I can't really give any review on it. Just using the stock nozzle for now with the vortech

Well it's been 2 days since the cycle. Was able to get a small live rock from a friend to try and seed the other rocks and used a small bottle of bio spira.

Should I be expecting the results below? Was thinking about getting a small damsel in there. Any feedback is appreciated

Have you seen a nitrite spike? You could try raising your ammonia to see how well your tank can break it down and check to see how quickly it is broken down.

I went ahead and did a fishless cycling and dosed 10% pure ammonia until I got it to 5 ppm

After 6 hrs ammonia was more then 8 ppm

24 hrs later ammonia is 0 and nitrite was 5ppm+ and nitrates was around 20-40ppm

I added another dose to being ammonia back up to about 3 ppm

Will run another test when I get off work

Sounds like its handling the ammonia very well. Sounds cycled to me. I did the same fish less cycle method minus the bio spira and when it was able to break down the ammonia and my nitrites were in check as well I did a water change to get nitrates under control and added 2 clowns, 3 hermits, and some snails.

it will likely be fast, I cycled my tank in a week doing this method

I have my Nuvo on my old biocube stand as well! Except mine has glass on the door (might be an older version)

Your tank is cycling pretty quickly. Mine took over a month to cycle, using dry rock, a small piece of raw shrimp, ghost feedings, and dosed Fastart M/Microbacter7.

I thought I was going to have a quick cycle since my ammonia spiked and dropped to 0 within 2 weeks, but the nitrite took forever to drop.

I was so tempted to add something to the tank but remained patient. Patience is def one thing i learned from this hobby fingerscrossed

Alright so was able to run another test

Ammonia - 0

Nitrite 2-5ppm

Nitrate -~10ppm

No diatoms bloom or algae yet either besides the algae that came on the live rock

I should be waiting for nitrite to go down to 0 and then do a ~75% water change before adding any live stock? Or wait for that algae bloom and get a CuC in there.

If it helps I did raise the temp to 83 degree.

drop your temp to 78-80 and don't add livestock till you zero out on nitrite and ammonia, then do a water change to get your nitrates down at which point you can begin to add livestock, I also never saw a diatom bloom till probably a week after maybe a little before the week but after my cycle for sure

Now I'm in the green algae that covers your rocks but not nuisance algae

Did another test before going to work

Ammonia - 0 ppm

Nitrite - 0 ppm

Nitrate - 0 ppm

Looks like the cycle is done but I put a little ammonia to see if nitrite and ammonia would be 0 after I get off work.

Only thing that bothers me is nitrate is at 0 now. I don't have any filtration besides filter floss. Is there something wrong?

you should have some nitrates, I suspect your tests might be bad? Try running another test

Definitely going to do that later. I was expecting at least 40+ ppm

yea after my cycle I think I was around 40-50ppm after 2ppm ammonia dosed at the beginning of the cycle

Take you bottle 2 of nitrate and tap it firmly on a solid surface a few times. Then shake for a few minutes and re test.

The bottle seem pretty durable so the harder the tap, the better your chances of mixing up anything that has settled will be.

Tapping and shaking the bottle did do it.

Nitrates ~20ppm

Nitrites - 5ppm

Ammonia - 0ppm

Guess ill start getting my water change things ready

Did a ~70% water change yesterday and stopped by a LFS to pick up a six line wrasse and 2 corals (if anyone can help me identify the zoa/paly and the other piece that would be great)
