Pod Your Reef

Spare parts

I'm new to the saltwater aquarium hobby and I'd love to start up my own reef. However costs are a little difficult for me as I'm younger and I'm struggling to find equipment to build my first tank. I was wondering if anyone has any spare items they could donate or sell at a reduced price to help me out? I would be forever grateful!

Just some ideas:

Spare/extra dry rock

Spare tank/tank you no longer want/can sell (I love rimless/sleek tanks but would appreciate any kind)

A little piece of live rock with lots of coralline to seed the rest of my rocks

Lightly used RODI system you don't need anymore/can sell for reduced price

Spare powerheads, wavemakers, anything that circulates water basically

Spare lights/what you can sell (I'm in love with kessils but id greatly appreciate any other one that can grow corals :) )

Spare or unneeded filter (like an AC) to hold media to filter my reef

Spare refractometer

Media basket (inTanks seem really good but kinda expensive for me to buy full price)

Any spare fish foods, coral foods, supplements or things like that

Basically anything you could spare to help me out making my dream a reality!

Thank you all! Not only to those who could offer me things, but to the whole community here because everyone is just so helpful in supporting new people like me get into the hobby! Check out my thread here for proof!

Why not grab a mower and start pushing? You'll have the money for the hobby in no time. If Harold can do it you can too.

Steve did say he would forgo fueling the inTank private jet and find you a scratch and dent basket for cheap.

I honestly wouldn't mind sending you some odds and ends once you're more assimilated in to our little community. A few members really helped me out during a financial slump, old man lawn in particular, glenn held on to my coral when I PCSed to Minot, etc. Really cool group of dudes on N-R, but they have to know you first.

That said, mowing lawns and shoveling snow would be a great start if you're too young or busy for a part time gig. Worked out great for Lawnman.

Haha yep! Although I got the tank for free, the rest was financed by lawn-mowings and selling a few odd ends. (Ex old Nintendo DS, etc).

Used equipment is awesome!

I might have some basic equipment, I'll look around :)

I know! I try to make my own money by selling stuff/babysitting but I can't do any strenuous labor like shoveling snow or lawnmowing right because I have a sports injury that needs to heal. Only time I can get a good paying job is during the summer doing summer jobs. I will pick up the lawnmower and start pushing when I can again though! And my parents are helping pay for some of it, but probably won't pay for a lot because they don't really think the cost of setting up a reef is worth it (they don't get it...)

P.S. Thanks Harry and psychosis!

From the other thread to this one... What sort of tank are you looking to put together? A coral only tank? Fish and Coral? Fish only? What is your actual budget?

Also, how much money do you plan to spend per month on the tank for continued upkeep?

Sorry for not answering your question in the other thread. I'd like to start a nano tank like a 20L with soft corals, LPS, and zoas, with around 4 nano fish (ocellaris clownfish, royal gramma, tailspot blenny, clown goby, shrimp, crabs, snails) hopefully developing into a full reef with time. Actual budget for setup cost is $350 because I still need to save money for livestock. Per month I'll try to make enough money with small jobs to cover up to $30 per month for maintenance (excluding cost for livestock).

Where are you located would also help, shipping tanks is expensive.

I'm at NJ

I would start with local Craigslist. Sometimes you find good deals there since people don't want to deal with shipping stuff and want to get rid of it cheap.

Slightly more than your budget but from Nano Reef in NJ:

Still need salt and a light to beg borrow steal.

I would just get an inexpensive jug of salt mix and buy 5 gallon distilled water from Walmart / Target and a cheap refractometer off of Amazon. Monthly cost for 10 gallons from 5 gallon jugs of water is well below your $30, and you simply don't have the means to do a RO/DI system right now (2.5 gallon water changes weekly for a ~10% WC per week is pretty good.)

You need to add livestock slowly anyway....

That's a great setup at a great price.

Otherwise from Staten Island under your budget at $300:

http://www.manhattanreefs.com/forum/sale-trade/185460-rsm-130d.html

Has everything, heater, skimmer, upgraded return pump, controllable LED lights...

Just add rock and sand to come up to budget, and a bucket of salt. Same recommendation to get salt mix and 5 gallon jugs of distilled water and a refractometer.

I've had an RSM130D and man they are amazing tanks, bullet proof and I LOVE Red Sea's Power Centers!

I might be able to dig some stuff up. You'd have to pay shipping of course if I can come up with anything. What size tank did you have in mind?

Oh wait, I remember you now. What size did you figure you wanted?

Yeah I'll cover the shipping, thanks! I was thinking a 20L or anything from 20-30 gallons ish

Thank you khuzdul for the suggestions I'll check them out!

I gotta be honest, I dont see it being cost effective to ship a standard 20L - 30L. It would probably be cheaper just to buy one used or local at Petco.

I wasn't really expecting anyone to ship a tank. Just if they're nearby I can pick it up. Otherwise I'll most likely buy the tank. Really just asking if anyone could offer anything (free+shipping or sell) that could help me overall. Thanks for your suggestion though, I'll also search on Craigslist and such
