Light Hanging Suggestions

As the title states i would like some ideas/suggestions on how to hang my new ATI light (courtesy of dave). The tank sits along the short end of my island in the kitchen so there is no wall to mount anything to. I also have 10 foot ceilings and dont think i can hang from the ceiling as there are no studs over the tank. I would like everything to stay nice looking to match the new system.

TL:DR; Need to hang ati from something not the ceiling and not the wall. Suggestions?

Conduit, easy to work with, paintable and you can make some nice hangers with it.

Oh and it's super cheap. This is not mine just one I found.

I don't think the conduit would work for him as his tank is on a counter....can't really attach the conduit to the tank itself or the counter for that matter...I had the same thought initially

Dunno. Could be that "along the island" means it is on a stand next to the kitchen island. Could also be not that :D.

I say drill holes in the damn counter and run conduit through it. I kid I kid

That would actually be awesome... Like an umbrella coming up from a table haha

I think conduit or something metal will be your best bet.

If you aren't able to permanently mount something to your countertop 2 ideas come to mind.

A tripod would be kinda cool - but you would need to figure out how to do it such that it doesn't look bulky and strange. I think it's a possible alternative to the tall standoffs that sit on the rim of the tank or go down to the counter surface.

The other option I think would work well is conduit or something similar. Basically you make a stand that has the legs go around the sides of the tank to balance the light. As an added bonus you could put small wheels or maybe some slippery nylon surface on the bottom so when you need to access the tank the light is easy to slide out of the way.

Sorry guys! only check the forum while im at work as when i go home i stay away from all computers and technology lol But yes the tank is on its own stand Along the short side of the island. Ive seen the conduit piping idea and i just dont think it matches the look im going for, the tank is the new red sea reefer 250 tank so all the lines are perfectly clean and i want to continue on with that.

So far ive found 80/20 looks pretty nice but is spendy, and the other idea is using the AI Rail system although im not sure it will work or hold the weight in this application.

I definately prefer the square shape/look to the round. Just looks nicer IMO thanks for all your replies!

80/20's not too bad.

I just thought of another idea - an adaptation of what I did.

Set the tank on a 3/4" board that extends off one side by about 4" - you can trim it out if you want to make it look cool.

Use a 6" or so length of double wide track and attach this to the piece of board that sticks out of the tank, parallel to the tank. Countersink the screw heads under the board so it sits flush with the counter top and bolt the double wide 80/20 length to the board.

Then, using 90 degree angle brackets attach an upright piece.

At the top of the upright piece either use a 90 degree bracket or use a 90 degree pivot to extend the arm out across the tank. The pivot is nice so when you need access to the tank you just swing the light hanging arm up.

This is pretty much exactly what I did except at the top I tried to use a sort of articulating arm which failed so I'll probably go back and order a 90 degree pivot. The whole thing cost me like $80 shipped, but it's cool looking, black anodized, and quite sturdy. It does require some fabrication skills though as you'll have to drill a few holes (can do it hand held but drill press is the way to go) and possibly cutting custom lengths unless you pay them to cut it for you.

I'll see if I can get some pics tomorrow.

You mean the C-250...that's what I'm saving for. You can retro fit Daves lights into the hood that comes with it. We did this with my Biocube 29 it worked wonderfully. I showed this on my tank thread.

I'm eventually going to add it to the C-250 hood as well...would not give up Dave's lights!

Nope, i mean the Reefer 250, different than the c 250. I just got it set up yesterday! Not sure how to upload photos though.

I think im gonna contact a Welding shop and see if they have some square aluminum tubing that they can make a 90 degree angle on, and mount 2 of those with brackets to the back of the stand
