Dusty Green Algae on Glass - Why is this happening?

My IM Nuvo 16 tank has been running for about 8 months now with 2 AI Primes and I had originally thought this was just a part of the tank maturation process. But it seems a little excessive at the moment on how often my glass gets this green dusty film. If I razor the glass, in about 2 days, it's as bad as the picture below:

My Nitrates are pretty much 0 as are my phosphates. I have a GFO reactor in the back that i've been running for about 2 weeks now as well. The only thing I can think of is my lighting schedule. Here's a pic of how they're currently set up:

Could they be on for too long? Too intense? I'm running two AI Primes over my Nuvo 16. The top line is 92% intensity for reference.

Any input is appreciated!

What is your livestock list and what are your feeding habits?

It looks like the algae is consuming the excess nutrients and keeping your test kits reading low. You could also have a detritus accumulation somewhere releasing excess nutrients. Do you vacuum sand bed regularly? Thoroughly?

I have one Prime over an 18" long tank and my peak lighting 65% (blues, RBs, UV, V) and only 25% for other colors. I set it up a couple of weeks ago and am going to ramp if needed based on growth (coral and algae). The photoperiod is about the same as yours, ramp up at 12pm and down at 8pm.

Maybe try adjusting your feeding schedule and backing the light intensity down a bit? For two Primes, that may be a bit high if there are excess nutrients around. So far I have had no increase in algae since setting up this light so I want to take it slow. I had algae nightmares in my last setup and being cautious this time has really helped out.

I get the same film over 3 days. I just use a Nano-Mag to clean it up- takes about 3 minutes.

  • 3 weeks later...

I have a JBJ 28 with a single AI Prime, only run the LEDs at peak of about 80, about 2:00pm, and are on for about 9-10 hours a day, yours seem very powered, and on for a very long time, try turing them on earlier, around 10, and off around 8...

I lowered my whites, greens, and red led's on the prime to around 20% and I'm going on my third day of the glass being clean. I guess one of those (Guessing the reds) were causing the algae issue. I'm going to increase one at a time to see what the cause is.

Its honestly MOST LIKELY the whites that cause the algae, i run my whites for 3 hours a day, peak at 40%.

I have some white algae scum on the glass of one of my tanks. Comes right off with my handy razor blade scraper but I don't know what the hell it is.

I have a total algae farm on my other tank, possibly partly due to the feeding but mostly due to the natural sunlight that hits it. Anyone want some algae? It's free!!?
