I have a 30 gallon tank and was wondering what the better heating choice would be. I will be using the cobalt neo therms

2 x 75 watt or

1 x 100 watt

Where do you live? How warm is your house/apartment typically?

I have a 200watt on my 20gallon. Its over kill but keeps things in check.

I run a single 100 watt neotherm on my tank and it's about 45 gallon total water volume

House stays about 70, tank has only been up a few days (had same heater on previous tank) and every time I've looked it's been right on at 76 degrees.

I have a 150w Neotherm for my 17g + 10g refugium. It's probably more than needed, but the price difference between the 100w and 150w was negligible when I made my purchase.

I like the idea of a backup heater, but it just doubles the chances of one failing in the On position. If your heater fails Off, your tank can survive a couple days without catastrophe. If one fails On, it might turn into a sauna before you even notice. Two heaters is a great idea if you've got them on a controller, though.

BTW, just a heads up... BRS & MD are both currently selling the Neotherm 150w for $73, but it's $45 on Amazon -- http://www.amazon.com/Cobalt-Brand-Neo-Therm-Aquarium-150-watt/dp/B0098ATATA/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1432649160&sr=8-1&keywords=cobalt+neotherm Not sure why the other two are so much higher. I find them both to usually be pretty competitive.

i live on the west coast of Canada, mild winters and average summers. my apartment average temp is prob around 70. Also my the place in the rear of my tank can only hold max height therm of maybe 9" depending on how high i run the water in the chamber. That was the reasoning with going with 2 x 75 as they will fit nicely in the vertical (recommended) position.

The way the Neo-therms are designed it is virtually impossible for them to get stuck on. The thermal circuitry should trip when the heater reaches a certain temp past your set point. Should be foolproof. They are accurate to .5 degrees too so that is a very good rate. I ran a 100w on my 30 Solana and the thing was hardly ever on. Tracked it with my Apex and it was on just over an hour a day. I keep my house on the cool side at about 67 degrees and the Neo-therm heaters are just very efficient so run time was very limited. On my 70 gallon system I plan to use 1-150watt.

Has anyone seen a neo therm get stuck on? I haven't heard of it yet.

I can vouch for the effects of a heater stuck on. My previous heater was a cheaper glass heater with mechanical thermostat. I was working a lot and had minimal time for the tank (feeding and top off) and started noticing some corals not doing well and assumed it was my lack of fussing over the tank. Well my heater apparently had a failed thermostat and was keeping my tank about 84 degrees. Slowly killed over half my corals. In a weird way I wish it would have failed to where it didn't shut off. At least I might have found it quicker. Swapped it for a neotherm and it was running 78 by the next morning. I'll never buy a cheap heater again. Debating getting a controller or at least a heater controller for the new tank still too.

I might have to start post asking if any neos got stuck. I don't think they do like cheapo heaters. I trust running two in my setup.

Failing is one thing. Getting stuck on another story. Don't know what I was thinking getting the expensive heaters. Next time I'll get the tetras from Walmart to save some cash.

I was thinking of getting STC 1000 from amazon for external control with eheim jager heater. Apart from neo therm these heater are also highly rated.
