Which skimmer do you recommend?

I haven't posted in a while but its time for me to upgrade my skimmer. I have been using an innovative marine ghost skimmer and I am not really that happy with it. What skimmers do you guys use and recommend? My tank is the innovative marine 40 gallon fusion. I am planning on starting to carbon dose so I need a skimmer that is able to pull out all the nasty stuff. Thanks for any help.

sorry should have mentioned this is an aio tank. No sump for a skimmer so It has to be something that will fit in the rear chamber.

Aquamaxx HOB-1. I hung it on my nuvo 16 in the back chambers, just had to trim the return line for width, not sure how much bigger the back of the 40g is so it may fit. It's a little pricey around $220 (at least when I bought it) but worth the $ IMO. Since its HOB and has a bubble plate, it will reduce the microbubbles as well as being a quality product. You won't be disappointed.

Another vote for the aquamaxx. I never owned it, but I hear nothing but good things. I had a nano remora and it was a POS! don't get the remora. A waste of money.

anyone have any oppinions on the cadlights pls-50?

I think there is a lot of hype surrounding its performance. I would say a good amount of people report a lot of issues and at the same time just as many say its a great product. I think my air pump skimmer for $35 works better but that's just my experience.

Which skimmer are you running?

I wouldn't bother with the non-elite pls-50. I couldn't get mine to skim. They even sent me a new pump.

I have tried 3 skimmers that work with AIO's and my favorite is the Reef Octopus BH-90. Mine is very quite and easy to adjust. Everything is outside the tank (I like that). Haven't needed to touch the adjustments in at least 6 months. Lazy me has it set to skim a weeks worth so I can time emptying/cleaning the cup with my water changes. Design and operation is about as close to a traditional in-sump skimmer as you can get for a HOB. Bulk Reef Supply has some detailed info on their site. Has my vote.

p.s I dont use any of the intake/output cups, the pipes just stick in the back compartments. I was told those were for in-tank setups and they were right.

I currently run a CadLights PLS-50 (not the Elite). I personally haven't had the issues at all with either noise or microbubbles. Not even a little. HOWEVER, because the thing is SO touchy, I'm looking to replace it. I read the Elite post in the CadLights forum and honestly it sounds like the exact same issues ppl were having with the regular they are having with the Elite - microbubbles (even though I didn't experience this), noise (even though I didn't expereince this) and still too touchy. I've almost settled on the Aquamaxx (just a little more research) and just hoping it will be a better way to go for my BioCube 29.

I have the cadlights pls 50 elite and it works great! It is so vary touchy tho bewarned and when I first installed it I took it back out because of micro bubbles. then I thought well I paid so much for this thing I better give it a shot it took about 3 days for the micro bubbles to stop. and now its not giving off any. stays pretty much right on point with my ato now and works great. just sensitive. I also put a small piece of paper napkin in the air intake since it was louder than I wanted you could hear a throaty noise coming from it. now its quite. I have not owned any different ones so I cannot gave any input. But the aqumaxx gets a lot of good reviews.

I've been using the Tunze 9001 on my all in one, and I've been happy with it.

Out of the box, the unit didn't fit in my overflow. But all I had to do was superglue the magnet to the side of the unit (instead of mounting it to the back), and that took care of it.

I just bit the bullet and bought the Aquamaxx.

I needed to turn off a powerhead so I was flipping switches - quickly - nope not that one, not that one... kinda deal, and I flicked off the return. Just for a second!!! and my PLS-50 overflowed that quick. I decided enough with this crap skimmer! There's sensitive, and then there's ridiculous! Maybe you'd have better luck, but I can say for me, in a BioCube 29, I can't even float a bag without having to turn off the skimmer because it will immediately go out of whack and overflow. I can't stick my hand in and grab a frag that fell, I (apparently!) can't even turn off a piece of equipment for a full three seconds without the skimmer overflowing so that thing is coming out. Hopwfully someone wants a used one but if not I guess I'll trade it at the LFS. Good Luck on your choice. I'll report back if the Aquamaxx isn't worth all the hype (should get it in about 2-3 days).
