cnseekatz
I understand that these guys can give you some of the most brilliant colors, and stark contrasts in the game. But I don't think I've ever seen a mature chalice "colony," only little tiny (albeit bright flashy) chips glued to frag plugs. I know that they kinda-sorta encrust, and kinda-sorta plate, but I've rarely seen one big enough to understand what they end up growing into. For the prices that these guys command, aren't there a lot of other ways to add some nice color to your tank? The nice/rare chips I've seen go upwards of $200-300! If you're a chalice lover, and have a big, mature example to show me, I'd love to see it! Link to comment
jambon
They are curious looking things... I have a blazing blue frag.it seams to reach for the light I have it off to the side. I believe they are a type of plate coral. Link to comment
kimberbee
I totes agree! Plus, aren't they super slow growers?? Link to comment
ZandEDad
A full grown chalice looks amazing - like a plating monti with lots of mouths on it. Colors are amazing and some are rather easy to keep. Not in my tank, but that's what I hear. Link to comment
marko
some grow as domes, others as plates. here is a pic of a larger hollywood stunner colony i found on google, so you know what a colony can look like: http://s176.photobucket.com/user/seph7/media/HollywoodStunner.jpg.html Link to comment
jestep
I agree that show piece colonies are some of the most amazing coral I've seen. I especially love the watermelon ones and other ones with bright distinct colored rims. I'll say the few that I've been in that much awe of, were so coveted by their owners I don't think anything would get them to frag a piece off. Personally, I tend to bleach them, so they're generally on my avoid list. Other thing is they look really drab under non-actinic lighting, even the super expensive ones. If you have a well lit tank most of the time, and not going for a fluorescent super actinic tank, skip them. Link to comment
cnseekatz
I decided to give these guys a shot, and picked up a cool piece from a LFS (on ebay actually). So it was inexpensive... Maybe one day, I'll figure out what a big colony can look like, but for now, I just joined the, "Check out my cool coral chip" club. Link to comment
cnseekatz
Well, here's my 3 month update on my "cool chip" experiment. I definitely haven't gotten any lateral growth, but it's getting a bit taller. So far, not so impressed! Link to comment
DocReef
I find there are extremes to growth. Some of my chalices are some of my fastest growing coral, while others are ridiculously slow. They look amazing once large. Some examples Link to comment
Amy
Here is a picture of a local reefers two Chalice he has I just love these two colors, he says they are approx. 4-5" in diameter, slow growing and paid the blue one "Miami Hurricane" $80.00 for a frag size and the red is "Double Rainbow all the way" $350.00 Canadian dollars. They are just beautiful believe me. I would love a frag of each when and if he decides to frag them. I just bought my first frag its a baby blue with red stripes, going to see how well they like my tank before I would get anything more expensive, this one only cost me $25.00 and its quite pretty in color. They are very very slow growing I did not ask him how long it took for his to get to that size in the picture but I would imagine quite a while. MikeTR those are some amazing beautiful Chalice you have wow very nice. What do you all pay for Chalice frags on the average in the USA? Link to comment
picoreef78
They are nice, just so expensive. I agree with the fad idea. Link to comment

reefernanoman
I have a dollar coin size Hollywood stunner chalice, and nothing can be close to it. It's pretty, but it has these very long sweeper tentacles that come out of its many mouths, which will sting and kill any coral close to it. It did a number on one of my sps. The tentacles just stick to other corals. I thought that it was a peaceful coral, but I was wrong. Looks can be very deceptive. Link to comment

I put it on the sand bed in the corner after it killed my candy cane and burned a few SPS pieces Link to comment
Amy
There are so many out there that is for sure, do they all have the long sweepers? The frag I just got the fellow told me it had short sweepers when its out, I sure hope so. What do you all feed your chalice corals? Link to comment
DocReef
Doc, what are these 2 called? Kat, these were examples of larger colonies from MACNA for the OP. I have the first one, but much smaller and it was sold to me as a Golden Eye Echinophyllia, not sure about that second one though. Pretty colors and neat shape. Link to comment

plainrt
Not giant but only started with one eye frag of the big one years ago. Had piece of the small pink one that was even bigger but sold when tank was doing bad so wouldn't kill. I got a frag back after tank came around and it's growing away now. Love me some chalices. Like to bottom juice/a few pieces. You'll see the chalice grab food above the "eyes" Link to comment
