So last Saturday-ish I realized that my both of DI resins were exhausted (partly my fault, I accidentally ran like 25g of non-RO water through the MaxCap SuperDI resin and completely exhausted it, FML). The Maxcap SuperDI combo is expensive, and I was like UGH, why do I have to do it noooowwww. By the time I got everything in the cart (figured I'd go ahead and do the prefilters, too, why not), so all told it was right at $100. Well, long story short I didn't order it earlier in the week, and I got a Paypal payment today, so I figured I'd go ahead and order them now. Well, looked at the site, and the Maxcap SuperDI and Silicabuster SuperDI combo is on sale! A very pleasant surprise! So with the savings I ordered some of the new New Life Spectrum 'Ich Shield' 1mm pellets to try out (I'm gonna pulverize some and see if I'm right that chloroquine phosphate is the active ingredient ;)), and figured I'd get a couple more things while I'm at it.

So thanks Marine Depot, you're the bizzomb! :)

Yup. First major order from them, and so far, very happy. Very easy ordering, very easy purchasing. Great updates on shipping and back-ordered items. Will definitely be purchasing from them again.

Dear Innovative Marine - you are late on your shipment of tanks to Marine Depot, so they can't send out orders... Could you kindly go ahead and get those tanks out to MD, please? Thanks!

Sincerely, some random dude who wants the tank he bought.

 Thank, YOU! Let us know you like that new food. It came in just in time to be included in our last email to subscribers and the response has been pretty favorable (in terms of interest); now we're anxious to hear how people like it!

Absolutely. I'll see if I can round up some sick fish at an LFS and see what the results are. I'm fairly certain that the food uses chloroquine phosphate as its primary medication, as it is stable in powder form, does not attack nitrifying bacteria, and is extremely effective. Only thing I've found that points against CP is that according to Ian Tepoot it is 'veterinary antiparasitic drug', and CP is used primarily as a malaria medication in humans.

A word of caution, though. In the product description it mentions not feeding to anemones or invertebrates, but I would recommend to include that the use of fresh activated carbon is highly recommended. CP (or, really, any effective medication against Cryptocaryon) is extremely toxic to inverts, so even if no inverts get ahold of the pellets directly, as they break down the medication will be released into the water. Small amounts here and there are ok, but over the course of the recommended treatment time (7 days per New Life if feeding to freshwater fish, but for marine fish this would need to be minimum 28 days) this could cause a toxic buildup. It would pose no threat, though, so long as there is carbon in the tank.

I really, really appreciate your response here. It makes me want to spend more time on NR!

I've provided a link to your post to our web content guy so he can consider bolstering the product description with your recommendations or some form thereof. We do this sort of thing internally all... the... time. Unfortunately the product descriptions aren't usually as information-rich as we'd prefer, so we often update them over time just as we're discussing here now. :grouphug:

Until it's really known what the active medication is, in the mean time I would just note that it contains an antiparasitic medication and that fresh activated carbon should be used for the duration :)

By the way, thank you for your positive review on BizRate. We know it's kind of annoying to get served with a survey pop-up upon order completion, but we use actually that feedback to improve all facets of our company. The ratings also feed into Google's search results, so we are super grateful to anyone who takes that extra step because it helps us in a number of ways!

Ok, so I received my order today :)

On the side of the 'ick shield' bottle, it says 'Active Ingredient 1,4-Pentanediamine, N4-(7-chloro-4-quinolinyl)-N1,N1-diethyl'. I looked that up, the molecular formula is C18H26ClN3. I thought that it looked familiar, and I was right - that is the formula for chloroquine. So, since that is indeed the active ingredient, under no circumstances would I use this food in a reef tank or a tank with invertebrates without fresh activated carbon.

Hope that helps out :flower:

Thank you very much! I just shared a link to your post with our content dude. I believe he added a little something after our last exchange, but we always welcome your insights to help us make our website and product descriptions more accurate and informative.

Ok, so after opening the canister of food, there is a little folded piece of paper with instructions. The jist of it:

  • Feed fish twice daily
  • Feed for minimum 21 days for marine aquariums
  • Feed for minimum 10 days for freshwater aquariums
  • Use fresh filter media to reduce any remaining medication
  • Food must NOT be consumed by corals or anemones or anything that is a zooxanthellae symbiont
  • Use a baster or pre-soak pellets to prevent them from floating about to prevent them from getting to corals
  • Remove all uneaten pellets, do not allow to break down in the tank
  • Do not broadcast feed pellets!
  • Do not allow clownfish to return to host anemones with pellets to feed the anemone
  • Turn off ALL flow in the tank to help prevent pellets from reaching corals

It even mentions that all new arrivals should be quarantined in a separate, bare tank, and then you can feed this food all willy-nilly :)
