happyclam
I will hopefully be setting up a Red Sea MAX 130D soon. I wanted to do either Caribbean shallow reef or a Pacific deep reef. My question was if the MAX could support this. If I did the Caribbean reef there would be significant amounts of algea and I'm worried that they would consume & lower the tanks oxgen levels dangerously low at night. Would the stock protein skimmer provide enough aeration at night? If I did the Pacific reef it would be dominated by Sun Corals & Tube Anemones (not photosynthetic), so there would be great daily food inputs. I would be doing 25% weekly water changes, but I was worried that the tank couldn't keep up with the nutrient input. Would the water changes & stock skimmer handle this? Thanks for the help! Discofruit
Add an air-stone in one of the back chambers, spot feed the animals. Link to comment

Mike Maddox
The protein skimmer should provide more than adequate gas exchange. Non-photosynthetic reefs are so cool, I'd set one up if I had the room. I'd plan on 50-100% water changes (I do this on any tank less than 100 gallons anyway) weekly, but there's no reason why it shouldn't work. If you're that concerned, get an ozonizer. Link to comment
