My ::DRILLED:: Fluval Spec V reef and sump

Spec

I'm a new member, and just want to show off my tank. It has been running for about six months, I've had freshwater tanks for years, but this is my first venture to saltwater. I don't know much about the corals, so I won't list what I've got. The part that I'm most proud of is, that I drilled the filtration section, creating an overflow. I also made a standpipe out of Loc-line tubing. I drilled the bottom of the display and made the in-flow nozzle out of loc-line. For anyone interested, I used 1/2" threaded bulkheads, and the one in the drain section BARELY fit. The sump is 10 gallons, split into 3 parts, first just has a sock, second has two heaters (I don't have one in the display tank), live rock and several types of macro algae, third is just floss and a pump. Lighting on display is Current Orbit Marine LED, sump is Eheim sump light. Thanks for any comments, advice.

I probably should have mentioned that this is a Fluval Spec V. I won it at an Aquarium society auction, and spent about a year building the sump, and display, and collecting all the parts I needed. These little tanks are begging to be drilled and turned into a nano reef, I knew that was the goal the day that I got it. Now that it's up and running I am happier with it than expected.

Nice job on the set up!! The scape looks nice and its awesome you showed how these little tanks can be drilled.

btw, you can combat that algae with peroxide, there are some threads here on how to do it.

Thanks for the tip! I will definitely look into that.

I wanted a heavily stocked display, that was clean looking and free of any extra heaters, etc., and I figured I was only going to achieve that with a sump-refugium that's bigger than the tiny five gallon display tank. So it's a fifteen gallon system, five display, ten gallon sump, on an opposite lighting schedule, and I seem to be getting good results.

nice tank! in photobucket, right click on image, Copy Image Address, then add it as a photo to the post so others can see it without clicking on the link. Or just dont use PhotoBucket cuz it kinda sucks. Flickr is much easier.

Next project on this tank is going to be making some magnetic frag plugs. I don't have any room left on the rockwork, and I want a couple SPS to round out my collection. I had a piece of Monti in there when it first started, but I put it in a crap flow area and it slowly died. I want a piece of some sort of Stag, and a Monti cap to mount on the glass on the far left side, where the powerhead is. The plan is to get some disk shaped frag plugs, super glue some Neodymium magnets to the back, and then cover the magnet with a bunch of silicone, and voila. Then, someday down the road, when I find one, I have my heart set on a Crocea clam.
