UPDATE --- I am currently fixing all the broken links for the pics that aren't working. 3/10/2015

I have been working on my new nano reef since the first of the year, and I think it is to a point that I should share the build up to where I am. I have a JBJ 28g Nano Cube with a custom full spectrum LEDs from LEDGroupBuy.com I have a HOB Refugium that also has LEDs. The tank is also bare bottom with starboard. I have used this method on my last couple of tanks and it seems to work great for me. Finally I have a custom diy Controller.

This is the most recent pic (Dec 2014, JBJ 45) and video (July 2014, JBJ 28) of the tank.

I will post mostly pics. If anyone has a question about any of the pics then just let me know. I would be happy to answer any of them for you.

Building the stand. This stand is made to hold a 24" cube but only has my JBJ for now.

Dude that cabinetry work is amazing. The dj control panel is a good idea to be in the front, but arent you afraid of your kids messing with it?

Very aesthetically pleasing and very functional stand- fish and corals are really happy- really nice.

Thanks. I had plenty of planning time.

The DJ control panel has a little door on it that is magnetically closed. The door blends in pretty good and is hard to notice. Plus my girls are really good about not messsing with daddy's reef.

My 2 yr old still doesnt get it. :(

I want to know how well that controller works.

The controller is made from an Arduino Mega 2560 with a 3.2 LCD. The software can be found on the internet. There are a few to choose from. I must say that I have never had a controller on a tank but after having one I will never be without one.

What does this controller do:

-Controls the lights for dusk/dawn and brightness

-Controls the speed of fans for cooling lights on tank and refugium

-Wavemaker with several settings

-Temperature reading of tank, main lights, and refugium lights

-Turns heater on and off

-Automatic feeder

-Auto Top-off

Here are a few pics of the build

Whoa, that looks both really cool and confusing to me but I'm sure it'll be fantastic. Man, you have a LOT of know how.

I made my final upgrade to the aquarium. I have come to love the AIO style tank. So I decided to go with the largest AIO tank. JBJ 45g Rimless is a pretty outstanding aquarium. I have only found to cons to the setup and these could be easily fixed if JBJ wanted to. The media basket is all but worthless. Its half the size that it should be and doesn't hold much media. The glass tops are also very very cheap. As of now the tank is hold up good and looks great. We all know that Im a man of few words so here's the upgrade pics.

I did a few updates.

First - I took out that diy media basket and found someone that was selling a few InTank media baskets. They were old ones for an IM 30/38 Rimless, but according to the dimensions online they would fit. I would just need to raise them about an inch. Once I got them home, I found out they were the old version and not the same dimensions as the ones online. Now they don't fit, but only by less than 1/8 of an inch.

So I went an purchased a 200 tooth saw blade for my tablesaw, made a zero clearance insert for the blade, and ordered some weld on 16.

I started by cutting the back wall off. I did this by starting on one side and make a 1/8" cut along the whole side from top to bottom. I raised the blade 1/8' to 1/4" and cut again. I repeated this till I was about half way through. I flipped over the media box and start all over on the other side until I have that back wall removed.

Heres is a pic of one with the back wall removed and one with the wall still on.

Only thing left to do was a little sanding to get the saw blade marks off and glue together. I also cut some lift legs from some spare acrylic I had to raise the whole thing an inch. And what do you know. I perfect fit.

I love the perspective in the 2nd picture and then how cradled and cozy your clam looks against the zoa garden.

Thanks I just hope they all start growing and spreading around.

WOW! I just went through the entire page (and quite a page it is!) and everything is really amazing! I liked the biocube pictures and I like the new tank even more! Good job in general on the updates.

Great coral growth, awesome DIY projects, and overall really nice build.

I do have to admit though that when I saw the pictures of thee tank overrun by algae I was freaking out a bit. Glad you were able to rope it in and get everything back on track.

I look forward to how you modify the LEDs - I'm in a similar situation where I used almost the same ratios you did but with the advent of lime leds and using more high CRI warm white LEDs vs. the neutrals I'm probably going to look into a "refresher". The good news is that I still have a light for my display fuge I need to make so any LEDs I take out of my main fixture will be used there. To that point I may be interested in buying up someones used LEDs as well ;)

Good luck man I'll be checking in again on this one.
