dont damsel cycle:(
aww poor fishy. yea they are hardy it is faster to cycle with them but still thats just mean. would you want to be in an unpredictable environment. (just imagine a really nice hawaii vacation or something like that then suddenly rain, sleet, snow, hot, volcanic eruption over your hut, warm weather, tsunami, pyroclastic flow, earthquake, strong winds one after the other after the other.... a plague of locusts (lol) STRESS!!!!. yea you get the idea. that poor little guy is going through all the ups and downs of a cycle
Great. The store told me he'd probably be okay, as did my friend who did his first cycle with one. And I'm pretty sure I read an article on here about how they help the cycle get going. Well, guess we'll see what happens.
What about all that "hair" on the rocks? Is that normal?
I should also add that I bought the RO salt water from the LFS, vs. making my own.
i dunno about the hair im a beginner at saltwater but im an experienced fish keeper to almost everything else. i dont know if that hair is normal it looks kinda yellowish to me. if you look at other pics they are usually green or purple. that looks like its dying.... hmmm i could be wrong im just learning so dont take my word for it. was your LR cured at all?
sigh RIP fishy...
Fishy will be just fine... dont sweat it..... people with more money than sense walk into LFS's all day and annihilate fish and corals once they get em home... cycling with a damsel is the last thing anyone should worry about!!! Tank looks great!! Love the LR... great coloring and great coralline algea on them!!

Most Damsels could probably survive in gasoline.
Damsels will not die in a cycling tank.

Actually, he did die on day 7. Maybe they can survive the cycle in a larger tank. Numbers were temp 78. Ph 8.2, alkalinity high, Nitrate 5.0 (was 0 on day 3), Nitrite .3 (was .05 on day 3). Amonia is 5.0 (was 2.5 on day 3). So I've got nothing in there now, except for a tiny snail which must have come out of the live rock, who has been in the same spot on the glass for a week. Got a red algae bloom starting now, looks like red dust on the sand and on the walls. All the white slimy stuff on the rocks is gone now. I'm at day 14.

You shouldnt be using any fish to cycle a tank in mo opinion. Fishless cycling is the only option for me. It's quicker and harms NO fish. It's so terrible that LPS are still telling people to cycle with fish. *sigh*

I think damsels could survive in nothing but air !!! lol
If your Nitrite is at 5.0 you NEED to do a water change. I'd swap out 30% of that water. Even during cycling, you shouldn't let your Nitrite get that high. Poor damsel. >.<
YOU HAVE A FISH IN THERE ALREADY! ARE YOU CRAZY?!

i dont understand you ppl. im new to this site but have been keeping tanks for years. all of you complain about what other ppl are doing with thier tanks like your pita terrorists. i understand that most are just tryin to help but jesus. the damsel will be fine. just dont overfeed him. most books and expirienced reefers will tell you to cycle your tank with them.
I killed 5 damsels while cycling my 6 gal, following the same advice as you got....
I will never do it again. sensless death. and I just killed 2 more using the wrong sponge.
I am going to hell for sure.
weird I feel guilty about those fish.
